June's Birds

- Kathy Cash Tittle

Every morning, June would walk outside and fill her little bird feeders up.

Then Dad would come outside and if I had spent the night, or visited in the morning, we'd all sit out there and drink our coffee and talk.

June would get so excited about all the little birds fluttering around, she'd start talking to them.

She knew which tree all her little favorites lived and would call them.
She'd be outside whistling to them, and always called them "baby" and "honey".

ADORABLE.

She'd say, "oh Kathy, there's my little baby finch..."
"here baby, come to mama"....and I SWEAR the little bird would swoop down closer and closer.

She had all these little birds so used to her, that they looked for her every morning.

I'd look at Dad, and he'd wink and say, "go ahead June...call your little tiny birds...then I'll get my crow call out and see how brave they really are."

June would say, "OH JOHN...don't you call those ugly old black things to come hurt my babies."

Dad would say, " okay, I'll wait 'til lunch time...that way, your birds can eat, and my crows will have a nice snack."

June, "JOHN!!! You are acting so ugly. You leave my birds alone, or those crow calls will magically disappear!"

Dad, "well. I DO know where to buy them. Kathy will take me to Walmart. they have them in the sporting goods section."

I'd step back and say, "don't ya'll get me in the middle of this bird thing!"

Dad, "Oh honey, you know you like those ugly black crows much better than those tiny little blue birds, yellow finches, and doves." and he'd wink again.
